Just in time for the Halloween season, Gerard Way released his first single since 2016, titled ‘Baby You’re A Haunted House’. Although the song marks a slightly more dialed-down sound compared to the rest of Way’s solo catalog, and lasts a mere 2 minutes and 46 seconds, even the most casual listener will be struck by the sheer bounciness and catchy-ness of this new track.

‘Baby You’re A Haunted House’ comes out swinging, opening with a cheery chorus and leaping straight into an equally energetic verse. The song finishes with 4 definitive beats on the drum, no frills, no drama. In fact, the entire song is fairly straight-forward, which is part of its charm. The lyrics chronicle the dedication of someone finding a way to love someone else, despite their ‘scary’ qualities – a heavy topic for sure, but the music is so lighthearted and easy to listen to, it lends an appealing innocence and purity to the whole idea. Vocally, Way has evolved into a cleaner, sweeter tone, so much so that even the most die hard My Chemical Romance fan might have trouble recognizing it now. With the work he’s done on his solo project has come a control and an expression in his voice that feels comfortable and natural in the context of his new music.

While there will always be music snobs among us who look down on any artist who changes their sound, ‘Baby You’re A Haunted House’ is proof that Gerard Way is still kicking and writing good music, and hopefully we get some more songs as infectious and playlist-ready as this. If you haven’t already, go listen to the song and check out the official lyric video below!
